So many quiet heroes float across my mind
shunning hate, choosing to be kind
From the beginning of time,
there's a long, long line
The mother who unfailingly sacrificed her own desires,
some living in a deserted, filthy mire
The citizen in a war-torn land
who found ways to give a helping hand
The teacher who observed the lonely child
welcoming them with a lovely smile
The nurse who never slept
constant bedside vigils always kept
The father who waited up every night
for the rebellious youth who took flight
The exhausted hard-working clerk
who was kind every day at work
The soldier who gave his life
leaving a sweet child and loving wife
The brave souls who prepared an escape
saving innocents their leaders would incapacitate
The crippled, deaf, dumb and blind
who unselfishly shared their brilliant mind
The pain-ridden, sick and dying ones
who bitterness, hate and darkness shun
The rescuers, front-line emergency crews
rushing in, hoping no lives to lose
The abandoned or abused child
growing up, without revile
Choosing to help others in that same space
making our world a better place
The courageous ones who spoke the truth
some were older, some in their youth
some persecuted, tortured or killed,
leaving burning hearts with hope instilled
On and on the heroes come and go
How many lives they touch, we can't know
Share their stories, share their light
Share their courage, their inward might
You are one of the noble ones too
One of the truest, purest few
Give your love, your brilliant light
Helping others reach new heights
