What if we were little hobbits?
living in a tiny hut
Such interesting creatures they are
especially as they travel afar
Adventurous souls with brave hearts
studying their maps and Middle Earth charts
Having their second breakfasts and little hairy feet
sharing in their delicious soup of potatoes and meat
Waiting for their friend, the wizard Gandalf
who’s now engaged in a deadly standoff
This timeless story of elves, orcs and men
captures my imagination again and again
Little hobbits are the heroes
fighting against the most evil of foes
This ancient theme of evil and good
Who will do what they should?
Treachery, betrayal, power and greed
No concern for innocents that bleed
We are there at the fire, feeling the heat
Gollum’s gnarly hands Frodo does meet
Into the fire, the ring must fall
In order to save them, one and all
In the end, the little ones prevail
The evil lord of the ring does fail
Just a story, maybe you say,
But there may indeed come a day
When we must choose–the ring in the fire?
or some more selfish desire
Decide now ahead of the test
to journey with the best to the West
Into the West with the elves we can dream
Floating into that heavenly scene
